The Valley Bikery Swift Campout and Bike Tour

Join the Valley Bikery as we spend this year’s summer solstice embarking upon an overnight bike-camping adventure in the nearby Santa Monica Mountains!

When: Saturday June 20 – Sunday June 21st

Meet: West Valley (exact meet-up location will be sent to you once you register)

On Saturday morning we will meet and then begin the ~30 mile ride to our private campsite; we’ll stop for lunch around the halfway point. At the campsite, everyone will be free to hang out and have fun! In the evening we will cook dinner together and have a campfire. Sunday morning, June 21, we will have breakfast, then pack up our camp and ride back to the start.

Register and pay ($15-$20) here.  Get the earlybird price of $15 if you register by noon on Friday June 12th!

A more detailed packing list, route map, directions/cue sheet, and itinerary will be emailed to each ticket holder.

More info:

THIS IS A MILDLY STRENUOUS TRIP THAT INVOLVES RIDING A LOADED BIKE 31 MILES WITH ALMOST 1700′ OF CLIMBING (EACH WAY). Please be sure that this activity is within your fitness level and that you are physically able to complete the ride. We will be riding at a medium/conversational pace–not a race, but not a beach cruise.

PLEASE BE ADVISED THAT THIS IS A *SELF-SUPPORTED* RIDE. This means that each rider/camper will be responsible for supplying and carrying their own camping gear. Racks & panniers tend to be the easiest way to transport stuff on a bicycle. However, new rackless storage options now exist (e.g. frame bags and special handlebar/saddle bags) that are useful to those who have bikes without mounting points or those who want the most lightweight setup. At the very least, each person will be expected to bring a sleep system (sleeping bag or quilt & sleeping pad), shelter (tent, tarp, bivy, or ground cloth), and food (dinner & breakfast). A camping stove is recommended but not absolutely necessary.

**This event will be limited to 35 riders maximum, and all riders must be 18 years old or over.

Our next Mobile Bike Clinic is coming up! Here are the details:

Sunday April 19th

@ People St. Plaza on Lankershim Blvd. in North Hollywood

Mobile Bike Clinic People StWhat is a Mobile DIY Bike Repair Clinic?

Basically we set up a bike repair stand and provide tools to help you fix a flat, adjust your brakes, fix your gears, or whatever is wrong with your bike.  Our goal is to support you in fixing your own bike – whether you’ve done that before or not.  We will help you figure out what the problem is and walk you through the process of fixing it so that you leave not only with a working bike but also with new knowledge and skills.  $5 per hour donation for stand time but no one turned away for lack of funds.

Go check out Reseda blvd. between Plummer and Parthenia on your bike this weekend – it’s scheduled for a significant upgrade as part of Mayor Garcetti’s Great Streets Initiative.  The existing bike lanes will be replaced with protected bike lanes, also called cycle tracks.  The street will be resurfaced to reflect the changes between now and April 14th, culminating with a walking tour of Reseda Blvd. just before Garcetti’s State of the City address at the Valley Performing Arts Center at CSUN.  More details at Streetsblog.
